India Flag

The flag of India was the result of an ad hoc meeting by the Indian Constituent Assembly on July 22, 1947. It was at this meeting that was 24 days before India’s independence from England that the flag was adopted. Upon India’s independence, the current flag was the national flag of the Dominion of India. The Indian national flag remained the same when the country was known as the Dominion of India to its change to the Republic of India.

The national flag of India was designed by Pingali Venkayya. The Indian flag is a designed with three horizontal bands colored "deep saffron" at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. At the center of flag display is a flag symbol of a navy blue wheel with twenty-four spokes; this commonly referred to as the Ashoka Chakra. The diameter of the flag symbol is three quarters the height of the white band. The national flag of India used by the Indian Army's war flag and it is hoisted at military locations.

The three colors, Saffron, White and Green with the Ashoka Chakra symbolize different elements of the Indian culture. Saffron represents disinterestedness that the Indian leaders must have toward material gains and need to dedicate them to public work. White represents light and the path of truth to guide Indian conduct. Green represents the people’s relation to the soil, and their relationship to the plant life.
