Greek Flag

Greek Flag
The flag of Greece is designed with nine horizontal bands of blue alternating white, five blue bands and four white ones. There are many different theories about the symbolism of the nine blue and white bands. One idea is that the nine bands of the Greek Flag represent the nine syllables related to the phrase in Greek “Freedom or Death.” The canton in the upper hoist-side corner is blue and has a white cross that symbolizes the Greek Orthodox religion.

The flag of Greece canton is a dark blue or Azure. The darkness of the blue has changed over time. The darker blue has been used since the 1960s. The flag of Greece originally adopted on January 13, 1822 has been modified over time with the current Greek flag being adopted as the national flag in 1978. The Blue and white of the Greek Flag symbolize the blue sea and sky above Greece and the white present the white clouds and waves of the sea.

There is a 2:3 dimension ratio. The Greek Flag Day is on October 27.
