Cuban Flag

The Cuban flag was designed in 1849 and sewn by Emilia Teurbe Tolón. The flag of Cuba includes three blue bands and two white bands. The blue Cuban flag represent the sea surrounding Cuba, and the white bands represent the purity of the Cuban patriotic cause. In the middle of all Cuban flags is a red triangle representing the blood shed that was spilled to free Cuba. Additionally there is a star that symbolizes the sky that turned red from the blood shed in battle. The white star in the triangle stands for independence. Narciso López, the one who created the flag of Cuba carried this flag in battle at Cárdenas (1850) and at Playitas (1851). Narciso was not victorious, but this was the first situation that the flag of Cuba was hoisted.

The colors in the current flag of Cuba have been assigned official symbolism. Officially, the Cuban flag’s blue bands reference the three old divisions of the island; and the two white bands represent the strength of the Cuban independent ideal. The red triangle symbolizes equality, fraternity and freedom and the blood that was shed in Cuba’s struggle for independence. Last, the white star is symbolizes freedom of the Cuban people.
