Costa Rica Flag

The national flag of Costa Rica was adopted on November 27, 1906. While the flag of Costa Rica wasn’t adopted until 1906, the Costa Rican flag colors of blue, white and red horizontal was in use since 1948 when Costa Rica gained independence from the Federal Republic of Central America. The wife of the then president, José María Castro Madriz designed the national flag of Costa Rica based on the colors of the French Flag. The Costa Rican state flag and ensign incorporates the coat of arms of Costa Rica. The Costa Rica civil ensign does not include the coat of arms.

The colors of the Costa Rica flag symbolize different elements of their culture and country. The blue color symbolizes sky, opportunities, idealism and perseverance of the people of Costa Rica. The white color represents peace, wisdom and happiness. The red color symbolizes the blood spent in defense of the country, as well as the warmth and generosity of the people.

Interestingly enough, the flag of Costa Rica resembles that of the flag of Thailand, adopted 11 years after the adoption of the Costa Rica flag. The colors of the Costa Rican flag resemble the flag of North Korea, the French flag, and the original flag of the United Provinces of Central America.
