Chile Flag

The national flag of Chile is composed to two equal horizontal stripes. The colors are white on the top and red on the bottom. There is a blue square on the canton with a white star at the center. The Chilean flag is also referred to as la estrella solitaria, in Spanish for "the lone star". The white star symbolizes a guide to progress and honor. The blue represents the sky and the Pacific Ocean, white represents the snow-covered Andes mountain range, and red symbolizes the blood spent to obtain freedom.

The flag of Chile was officially adopted October 18, 1817. Initially the general design of each flag color was determined and in 1912 the star was included. The Chilean Flag is similar to other flags. The Chilean Flag resembles the flag of Texas, but was introduced 21 years before the Texan one. Additionally, the national flag of Chile is similar to the American Confederate flag, also referred to as the Stars and Bars. Last, the flag of Chile is similar to the flag of Liberia. The difference between these two flags is the multiple horizontal stripes of the stars of the Liberian flag.
