Checkered Flags

Checkered flags have found its way into popular culture as a symbol of finishing. Many times not associated with auto racing, checkered flags have become so well recognized that often it is used to indicate the finish of many activities including successful software downloads and installations.

No standard is used to design checkered flags. They vary, but typical colors are black and white squares or rectangles arranged in a checker board style pattern. Some popular checkered flags are red and white checkers and blue and white checkers.

NASCAR includes other emblems or symbols on their checkered flags including fuel sponsor’s logo. For NASCAR and F1 races one checkered flag is waved at the finish line while in Indy Car races 2 checkered flags are used to signify the end of the race.

While the origins of the checkered flag have been lost many theories exist to fill the void. One theory has it that checkered tablecloths were waved at the end of horse races during the early days of American settlement. Another theory claims that the use of checkered flag was connected with 19th century bicycle races in France.
