Brazil Flag

The flag of Brazil is also referred to as Auriverde which means "(of) gold and green". The current Brazil flag was officially adopted on November 19, 1889. The national Brazilian flag and emblem has generally maintained the same design throughout the years, but has undergone minor revisions. The current flag of Brazil has 27-stars; this version was adopted on May 12, 1992.

The flag of Brazil was inspired by the flag of the previous Brazilian Empire. The prior Brazilian imperial flag’s green background represented the Imperial House of Braganza of Pedro I, the first Emperor of Brazil, and the yellow represented the Habsburg Imperial Family of Empress Leopoldina, Pedro I's first wife. The green and yellow represented the founders of the Brazilian monarchy. The center of the Brazilian imperial flag included the Imperial Coat of Arms.

The current flag of Brazil colors hold different symbolism. The green background represents the Brazilian forests, the yellow rhombus stands for the mineral wealth, and the blue circle, which replaced the coat of arms of the previous flag, represents the sky above Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889, the day the Republic of Brazil was pronounced.

The stars dotting the blue circle represent the union's member-states - each star representing a specific state. The number of stars on the flag of Brazil changed with the creation or addition of additional states. Since the early days of the Brazilian Republic, the number of stars has grown from 21 original stars to 27 current stars. These 27 stars represent 26 states and the Federal District.
