Argentina Flag

The flag of Argentina was officially adopted in 1812. The Argentinean flag is designed with three equal horizontal bands light blue, white and light blue. Six years after adoption in 1818, the Argentina flag was modified to include a yellow Sun of May to the center.

Also known as the Official Ceremonial Flag, in Spanish it is known as Bandera Oficial de Ceremonia; this is the flag with the sun in the center. Argentina flags without the sun are considered the Ornamental Flag, in Spanish it is known as Bandera de Ornato. Even though both flags are considered national flags of Argentina, the Ornamental Flag must be hoisted below the Official Ceremony Flag. The Argentina Flag Official Ceremony version is for civil, state and war uses and the Argentinean flag with the ensign is an alternate civil flag and ensign.

The flag of Argentina design is proportioned 9:14, and the official size is 0.9 by 1.4 meters. The blue bands on the top and bottom of the flag is a cerulean blue with white at in the middle. Each colored band is 30 centimeters tall. In the center band the emblem is the Sun of May (Spanish: Sol de Mayo), a golden sun.

In Argentina, June 20 is celebrated as Flag Day, a national holiday.

The Argentine flag was the inspiration for the flags of Uruguay and Paraguay.
