American Flags

The American Flag, also known as the flag of the United States of America is designed with thirteen equal horizontal bands starting with red at the top and with alternating white. The canton is a blue with fifty white, five-pointed stars designed in nine horizontal rows. The rows of stars in the canton alternate between six and five stars with six stars start at the top and bottom and alternating in between. The fifty stars on the flag represent each American state while the red and white bands represent the original thirteen colonies. The American flag is also known as the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and The Star-Spangled Banner.

The US flag has been changed twenty six (26) times its adoption. The American flag with 48-stars was not changed for 47 years. On July 4, 1959 the flag of the United States with 49-stars was officially adopted.

When the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, the United States did not have an official national flag. Later the Grand Union Flag was recognized as the "First National Flag" of America. This flag resembled the flag of British East India Company.
