Afghanistan Flag

The Flag of Afghanistan is tricolored with black, red, and green vertical stripes. This version of the Afghanistan flag has been flown in Afghanistan for the past twenty years. The center emblem is the emblem of Afghanistan with a mosque with its mihrab facing Mecca.

The Flag of Afghanistan was adopted by the transitional government of Islamic State of Afghanistan in 2002–2004. Similar to the flag flown in Afghanistan during the monarchy between 1930 and 1973; this flag differs in that the shahadah at the top of the coat-of-arms (seen in gold/yellow) in the center was added. The new flag was officially adopted January 4, 2004.

Interestingly enough, in the twentieth century no other country flag has had more changes made to it than the Afghanistan Flag.

The pre-Taliban-era and Afghan Northern Alliance flag contains the same Afghanistan emblem, but boasts different surrounding colors including green, white and black
